The American Aerospace & Defense Summit
Mr. McNamara presented “Competing in The 4th Industrial Revolution – Success at the Intersection of Culture & Tools” at the 2018 Aerospace & Defense Summit in Glendale, Arizona. The session got high marks by session participants many of whom are in the midst of transformation efforts themselves as the Aerospace Industry looks to cut time-to-market, increase innovation and lower costs.
Most major companies are in some form of “transformation” effort minimally to maintain their competitiveness in an environment made volatile by technology. Aerospace and Defense is no different.
The symbiotic relationship of tools and culture must be understood by executives to lead their transformation efforts…McNamara spoke about how the old tools produced the old culture and how the untapped possibilities of new tools are threatened with uncompetitive cultures that required intervention and the establishment of new cultural practices required to leverage the new tools.
McNamara used examples from experience in highly capital intensive product test (engineering, manufacturing, repair & overhaul, and manufacturing) but are portable to other functions to increase speed and innovation while reducing cost. In fact, it is quite often the case that the changes initiated in one department can lead to change across an organization if the change is nurtured and lead effectively.
