Tools have always aided transformation

Humans are tool users. Today’s new tools have the potential to change the game just like they did in previous industrial revolutions. The tools of the last industrial revolution enabled the division of labor and specialization.  Operators and their machines performed standardized work sequenced in assembly lines. Alfred Sloan at GM used these principles to create the hierarchical business structures that are so common today using standardized work and division of labor between departments. GM became the most powerful business in the world in the most powerful industry in the world while crushing the competition.

The 4th Industrial Revolution, Act 1: The Invention of the Computer and the Internet

Computers and the internet are today’s new tools. They’ve been around what seems like a long time but it is only today that we see people and companies learning how to use and exploit them to dominate their space. Setting the stage for today were companies like Microsoft, Apple, and IBM who made personal computers ubiquitous while companies like Cisco laid the infrastructure for the internet and the connection of all those computers.

The group dominating today has learned to use what the previous group invented to produce other competitive advantages. Apple, Alphabet, Facebook and Microsoft are expected to grow their earnings per share greater than all other companies according to Investor’s Business Daily. They are joined in the top 10 most profitable companies by Verizon and AT&T.

In 2019 the founder of Amazon was the richest person in the world overtaking Bill Gates and Warren Buffet.

Each of these companies has invented software that operates on networked computers, including cell phones, taking data input from individual and sensors to dominate their space.
